Gary,
I've seen this story evolve (many thanks to Poynter). As a former journalist, this is sad when non-editorial and non-journalist reasons interfere with a newspaper's core business. (That is, fairly, accurately reporting news and information.)

However, in our mostly free market, someone or something will step forward and fill any news gap that the SB News-Press may be opening.

Maybe some VC will come forward and finance the News-Press staff members who have quit so they can start a rival paper??

Or, as you suggested, someone will organize citizen journalists.

As for the future of newspapers -- focus on local/regional coverage. And, join continuous the 24-hour news cycle by using their Web sites and e-mails and blogs and etc. etc.

I'm of the opinion that the future of local news is on the web. Take a look at Westport Now - http://westportnow.com/ - a great example of a vibrant community with no local media to serve it and someone saw the opportunity.

David, I agree (and I'm familiar with the Westport example), but only to a point. This only works if the community is connected to the Internet -- many people in many small towns don't have the means to be online, and I become concerned when the only way to access news is via technology and thereby creating a deeper digital divide. Journalism is a public trust, so I hope we find a way to ensure that all sectors of the public, rich and poor, have access to local news.

Every dark night is followed by a bright sunny day. So, patience and attention is required and things will be fruitful in near future.
