Everyone is focused on the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11. TV shows, public events and story after news story remind us of what was lost and what was left.
But today is also a day to remember. Ten years ago today was the last day before it all changed. The last day of calm on our shores, the last day the sun set on a nation at relative peace.
This was the day before fear, before suspicion, before blame. The last day of the old world. The time when terrorism happened to other people in distant countries -- when we were strongest, fearless, and as it turns out, oblivious.
I mourn for the 3,000. I still can't watch footage of the towers or any documentaries about the attacks.
I don't remember where I was on Sept. 11, not because I don't care, but because the memory is so painful I simply can't find it.
But I remember Sept. 10. And there are times, like right now, when I would give anything to go back.
